Red alert as extreme weather claims life of man in freezing water

Schools closed, flights cancelled and operations scrapped as UK prepares for worse disruption

Parts of the UK were put on red alert on Wednesday as heavy snow fell across the country, closing roads and schools, delaying medical operations and causing widespread travel disruption.

A red warning means extreme weather is expected, with widespread damage, disruption to travel and power disruption and risk to life all likely.
