Hospital chiefs are told by NHS England to take drastic action as even more patients than usual seek care over Christmas

Tens of thousands of patients are having their surgery cancelled and hospitals are setting up makeshift wards in an unprecedented move by NHS bosses to avoid the service going into meltdown this winter.

NHS England has told hospital chiefs to make the changes so they can cope with “the scale of the challenge” they will face as more patients than usual seek care over Christmas and new year.
